El Escorial - Amazing

Vicinity of Madrid, begun on 23 April 1563 – completed in 1584

The Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a historical residence of the Kings of Spain, a Spanish royal site that currently functions as a monastery, royal palace, museum, and school.

El Escorial has been the burial site for most of the Spanish monarchs of the last five centuries, the Bourbons as well as Habsburgs.

The floor plan of the building is in the form of a gridiron – or grill. The traditional belief is that this design was chosen in honour of St. Lawrence who, in the third century AD, was martyred by being roasted to death on a grill. The image of the grill can be spotted throughout the building, not just in its floor plan.

What to say? Like most things I discovered in Spain, I found it amazing.

It is one of those places, however, where visiting in spring or summer would have been preferable – in order to explore and enjoy its gardens and fantastic location.

On the other hand, I do love the 'frosty' paving stones - captures a wonderful mood to the interior courtyard.

On the other hand, how wonderful, wonderful, wonderful it was - here and in other places in Spain & Portugal - not to have the reputed huge crowds of tourists! That truly can't be under estimated.

Here's a wee taste of it.
