Siena
I
went on the optional trip to Sienna, a medieval walled city, its
historic centre and square a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to local legend, Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius,
two sons of Remus and thus nephews of Romulus, after whom Rome was
named. Supposedly after Remus' murder by Romulus, they fled Rome,
taking with them the statue of the she-wolf suckling the infants
(Capitoline Wolf), thus appropriating that Roman symbol for the town.
The colours of the town are black and white, symbolic of the colours of the horses used by Senius and Aschius in their flight.
