Chiesa
di San Biagio (1580)
Tuscany, Italy
Our tour made a brief stop at this late Renaissance church.
Constructed in the shape of a Greek cross, it was designed by
Antonio da Sangallo the Elder.
The
painting at the altar has been associated with miracles, but I love
this other painting with the character in the lower right hand
corner. It is a perfect example of a Renaissance technique called
the "sacra
conversazione" -
or "sacred conversation", whereby a character in the painting invites
us by a gesture, or looks directly at us - to join them.
It is an
artistic way to bridge the thin veil or barrier between the sacred
space in the painting, and our own reality.
Love
it.
