Lisbon, Portugal
We were given a
'panoramic tour' of Lisbon, including a tour of its port. This was
great in that it introduced the group to some of the wonderful
attractions in the city and put the sights into some historical
context. However, we did not have the opportunity to visit inside
them. I think in our case it wasn't even possible, given it was a
Monday and they were closed. Also, I guess there is only so much one
can do given limited time in the country.
It was
wonderful, nevertheless, to be out in the warm, sunny port and view,
at the least, the facades of these attractions.
I guess I'll
just have to return one day.
(Not
a hardship, that.)
Belem Tower – Lisbon
This tower was
built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor
and was the starting point for many of Portugal’s famous “Voyages
of Discovery”. Now it stands as a monument to them. For the
sailors it could be the last sight of their homeland they would have
for months, or years or possibly forever.
It is a UNESCO
World Heritage site.
Padrão
dos Descobrimentos
The “Padrão
dos Descobrimentos”
aka the “Monument
to the Discoveries”
is situated on the northern bank of the Tagus River
estuary.
Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade
with India and Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Great
Age of Discovery
(or Great Age of Exploration)
during the 15th
and 16th
century.
Mappa
Mundi
The
delightful paving stones forming the “compass rose” and “mappa
mundi” (map of the world) was a gift from the Republic of South
Africa and created from various marbles. It is a very fun, artistic
and interesting way to illustrate its global exploration.
Jeronimos Monastery
of Lisbon
The monastery is a
great example of the Portuguese late Gothic “Manueline”
style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1983.
Enjoy the pictures
including some of T.J. (soccer enthusiast) engaging with a small boy
and his soccer ball.
